Was Jesus a Refugee?

Image
In Matthew 2:13, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Rise, take the [baby Jesus] and his mother [Mary], and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him." So Joseph took his family to Egypt and remained there until Herod died. Now some have claimed this means Jesus was a refugee. Usually this is to score political points or make some kind of argument about immigration. Generally speaking, a refugee is someone who's forced to flee their own country because of violence or a natural disaster. Given that Joseph with his family were fleeing the wrath of Herod, maybe they could be considered refugees. But recognize that the family never left the Roman Empire. They left Bethlehem and fled to Egypt, to the Jewish settlement at Alexandria. This means they were even staying with their own people in a thriving community, and likely used the gifts the magi gave Jesus to pay for their stay....

Only a Sith Deals in Absolutes?

Image
Star Wars, one of the most celebrated movie sagas of all-time, which gave us one of the greatest plot twists—"I am your father"—followed by one of the dumbest—"Leia is my sister." And to prove this epic fail was no fluke, creator George Lucas came up with the prequel films, in which we get this stupid line: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes." Which would be an absolute. Hey, even Harrison Ford said, "George, you can type this [Bantha fodder], but you sure can't say it." To say "There are no absolutes" is a self-defeating statement. Therefore, there must be absolutes. And you know this. No one actually believes things like "there's no such thing as truth" or "truth is different for everyone" because you'd have to rely on objective truth in order for those statements to be true. Therefore, there is such thing as truth, and that truth is the same for everyone. The Bible says that the unrighteous supp...

Wake Up Olive?

Image
Olive, come out of that grave; Come out of that grave in Jesus' name... What you're hearing is a worship song at Bethel Church, commanding a little girl who died 6 days earlier to rise up out of the morgue and come back to life. The story of 2-year-old Olive captured world-wide attention, as her family asked others to pray for her resurrection. But none of the stories of resurrection in the Bible include a week-long appeal. Take Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, but Jesus simply stood at his tomb and said, "Lazarus, come out," and he immediately came back to life. Jesus and his friends didn't stand there singing for days. Bethel Church preaches a different Jesus than the Jesus of the Bible. They do not believe Jesus is God incarnate—that He is very God and very man. Rather, they believe Jesus stopped being God and He was only a man. What Jesus "modeled," we're capable of doing, including raising the dead. Responding to this contr...

This Will be a Sign for You?

Image
And there were out in the field, shepherds, keeping watch over their flock by night. When suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared before them, and they were greatly afraid. But the angel said to them, "Fear not! For I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you. You will find the baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." Seven hundred years earlier, the prophet Isaiah said, "The Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel," which means God with us. So the sign announced by the angel was that the prophecy had been fulfilled. Christ the Savior is born! But this was a sign to the shepherds in another way. See, shepherds practically lived with the sheep and goats they tended. They were considered unclean by Jewish standards. But the angel sa...
